Building a Following Friday: Show Yourself Winning

Don't you love how people will be fans of a football team when it's doing well then trash it when it hasn't won a game all season? Everyone loves a winner. We all like success. Most of us are happy with those who are celebrating their successes. Give the people what they want! Show them that you are a winner!

Many people are very humble, and that's great. They don't want to brag and rightly so. No one likes a prideful person. Showing yourself winning is not bragging. Bragging would be, "I've been on the New York Times Bestseller List for the past three weeks! Look how great I am! Will be rolling into my next book signing in my brand new Lamborghini!" Showing yourself winning would be, "I'm so thankful for all of the support my kind fans have given me! My most recent book has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for the past three weeks, and I would be very grateful if you all help me to keep it there!"

The big difference between bragging and showing yourself winning is thankfullness. Not to be rude, but you aren't owed success. You aren't entitled to your book selling a single copy. Your success is due to two things: your hard work and the support of others. You should feel and express thankfullness for peoples' support.

Let's think through some idea as to how you can show yourself winning without bragging:

  • Copy and paste a good review about your book into a Facebook or LinkedIn post. You're not praising yourself. Someone else is. Maybe even tag the person if you can and thank them for their kind review.

  • Thank people for their support AND add specifics as to what specifically they've helped you accomplish. Maybe your book was an Amazon Hot New Release. If so, thank people for giving you so much support in the first twenty four hours of your book being available.

  • If you just reached one hundred thousand followers on Twitter or one hundred thousand Facebook likes, announce it and thank people for all of the fun you've had interacting with them along the way.

There are so many ways in which you can show yourself winning, and there are many ways to show that you're thankful instead of just another proud person. Give people a winner. Get them to love you and to root for your continued success.
